Making Sense of the Chaos – Rick’s Approach to Composing Captivating Landscape Photos

Our natural world is visually complex. Light, texture, depth, and scale all competing for attention at once. Rick will explore how photographers can bring order to that complexity through intentional composition. He’ll cover the foundational rules of composition and how to apply them practically in the field, including how to build a scene in layers, manage spatial relationships between elements, choose the right lens for your vision, and make deliberate decisions about horizon placement.

Whether you are just developing your compositional eye or looking to refine your approach, this session offers a framework for turning a chaotic landscape into a compelling image.

Distinguished Photographer: Rick Berk

Rick is a fine art landscape and nature photographer based on Maine's scenic midcoast, specializing in large-format, museum-quality prints collected by art buyers across the United States and around the world.

Photography has been a lifelong pursuit for Rick, spanning nearly 30 years. He began as a sports photographer covering professional events before spending almost a decade with Canon USA as a technical specialist, training photographers, retailers, and hobbyists in both technology and photographic fundamentals. Today he's back behind the camera full-time, exploring the landscapes of Maine, the American West, and beyond.

Rick's approach is rooted in intention and craft — composing each image carefully with close attention to light, tone, and atmosphere, and producing every print with premium archival materials. In addition to his fine art work, he leads photography workshops to share his knowledge and passion for the craft. www.rickberk.com
